Coming soon? United are closing in on Strootman according to Materazzi

Manchester United are just "one step away" from securing the signature of Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman, according to Italian agent Matteo Materazzi.

Dutch international Strootman is a massive favourite of United boss Louis van Gaal, so much so that the Reds boss re-jigged his entire Netherlands strategy during the World Cup because of the midfielder's absence.

Strootman, 24, missed the tournament with a serious knee injury, but returned to action in November with the Giallorossi.

And United are eager to bring the player to Old Trafford to team up once more with his former Netherlands boss.

Now Materazzi has declared himself confident that a deal is on the brink of being completed for the former PSV Eindhoven skipper.

"Manchester [United] are one step away from Kevin Strootman," Materazzi told Rai Sport.

"The British club will pay €40million (£32million) into the coffers of the Giallorossi."

The Dutchman refuses to rule out a big-money move, stating: "I discuss that with my CEO and not with anyone of the media"

Bale out: Could the Welsh wizard be on his way back to the Premier League?

Louis van Gaal has refused to deny Manchester United's interest in Real Madrid star Gareth Bale.

The former Spurs man has been subject of much speculation after reports in Spain linked him with a £120million move to Old Trafford.

At his press conference ahead of the Boxing Day clash with Newcastle United, Van Gaal was tight-lipped - although he did admit he would discuss such dealings with Ed Woodward.

He said: "I cannot discuss that with you. I discuss that with my CEO and not with anyone of the media."

Bale would add to a plethora of attacking talent already at United, as they look to restore their status among Europe's elite.

The Welshman has impressed during his time at the Bernabeu thus far, netting 33 goals in 66 games, also providing 24 assists for his team-mates.

He scored in both the Copa Del Rey and Champions League finals last year, both of which Los Blancos won - and also found the back of the net in their recent Club World Cup triumph.

However, over half of Real fans surveyed by Spanish website AS revealed they would sell him for a bid in excess of €150million.

Bale signed for the Spanish giants in the summer of 2013 for a record fee of €100million.

What Next For Arsenal After Their 2-2 Draw With Liverpool Yesterday?

Martin Skrtel scored deep into injury time to earn Liverpool a 2-2 draw at home to Arsenal on Sunday.

Arsenal looked set to move to within three points of the top four after coming from a goal down to lead 2-1. After falling behind to a goal from Philippe Coutinho, the Gunners—who had been outplayed for large spells of the game—battled back. They got goals from Mathieu Debuchy and Olivier Giroud and looked set to steal the three points.

Liverpool v Arsenal - Premier League

However, Skrtel—head bandaged after taking a nasty knock earlier in the match—powered a header into the bottom corner.

Liverpool fashioned enough chances to win three or four games, and the late leveller was the least they deserved.

Arsenal’s midfield lacked zip, and Liverpool—in particular Coutinho and Adam Lallana—were able to find space to run at the Gunners’ defence.

Both Coutinho and Lallana crafted shooting opportunities in the opening half an hour, but neither effort tested Wojciech Szczesny.
